Information about the teaching of controversial topics in the public schools is of growing importance to educational policymakers because of increased public concern. While most educators agree that openly examining controversial issues "can promote positive, democratic political attitudes" (VanSickle 1983), some people suggest that controversy has no place in public education. This is the first paragraph of the paper. |
